After Antigone compares herself to Niobe, the Chorus reminds her she is human, not a goddess. Antigone accuses the Chorus of "mocking [her]." Because of that, she believes that the public thinks she deserves her fate, asking them "why do you all ... insult me now right to my face?" However, she is wrong. Earlier, the Chorus said they were crying for her and also said she carries fame and praise with her to her death. The public generally believes she is being wrongly punished.
