DNA profiling is carried out using the Short Tandem Repeats (STR) analysis, which compares specific loci in the DNA. Although STRs are spread out all over the human genome, a large majority of these STRs are located in the non-coding regions, and only some of it (around 8%) is located in the coding regions.
