  Hi.Those who were not merchants, and those who lived on the frontier. Those who lived in the Tidewater area were usually considered to be higher class. The class system of the colonial era was determined more by location, religion, and race rather than blood (as it was in England). It was more mobile, also, than the feudal system of England.
